LEARN KARATE TOGETHER

With a focus on functional kata application: How bunkai makes the difference

Kata bunkai is far more than dissecting movement sequences—it is the key to practical kata application and a deep understanding of traditional karate techniques. That’s why our training emphasizes functional execution: kata becomes genuine, usable self-defense only when a technique can be applied under pressure and against a resisting partner.

Understand Your Kata: Our Concept for Effective Application

Kata is not merely form – it is substance, strategy, and the hidden boss behind everything. We understand Kata as a structured collection of principles and technical solutions: a kind of formula book for real karate application. To ensure these techniques become more than just movement patterns in a real situation, we place the effective application of Kata – the Bunkai – at the heart of our training.

Through targeted partner practice, the potential of Kata Bunkai becomes both visible and tangible. Techniques are tested under realistic conditions, individually adapted, and taught in such a way that they become ingrained and remain accessible – even under stress. Our approach focuses on effect instead of repetition and on understanding instead of mere demonstration.

Participants develop a deep technical comprehension, refine their self-awareness, and learn to react flexibly and intuitively to attacks. The goal: Karate that works – in the dojo and in everyday life.

Karate Praxis founder Christian Wedewardt (7th Dan) and his team stand for practical, substance-based karate. The classical 3K structure – Kihon, Kata, Kumite – is transformed into a modern, functional training concept. Kata is not an end in itself, but the foundation for real self-defense, tactical behavior, and meaningful action options.

With effective Bunkai, Kata comes alive: movements gain context, techniques gain purpose, and Karate becomes a system that can be understood, experienced, and applied – leading to greater self-confidence, decisiveness, and clarity.

Why should you host a Bunkai seminar?

A Kata Bunkai seminar with our focus on Effective Bunkai brings not only technical depth to your dojo or federation, but noticeable training quality – straight from real practice. It creates:

  • Clarity for students and instructors

What is a technique supposed to achieve – and how does it really work? The seminar makes Kata application understandable and logical.

  • Motivation through practical relevance

When techniques can be experienced, they stay in both mind and body. This leads to sustainable learning success.

  • Fresh input for everyday dojo training

New impulses enrich training – without losing the roots of Karate.

  • Community through shared experience

Whether as a team or a federation – shared understanding connects. It strengthens cohesion and the learning culture.

This seminar is ideal for everyone who doesn’t just want to show Kata, but understand, experience, and apply it. Our Effective Bunkai proves: every Kata contains a functional combat system – you just have to make it visible.

Burg Stahleck Karatepraxis Retreat – July 2025

The Karatepraxis Retreat at Burg Stahleck this year was once again beyond words—truly unforgettable and filled with growth, laughter, and connection.
We had the privilege of training under some truly incredible instructors: Sensei Iain Abernethy, Christian Wedewardt, Master Ken and Matt Page. Each of them brought their own unique approach and energy to the seminars, and we were incredibly lucky to benefit from their deep knowledge, generosity, and passion for karate.
From powerful bunkai sessions to dynamic drills and insightful workshops, every class was a learning experience in its own right. The energy was heightened by over a hundred amazing participants.
One of the absolute highlights was The Master Ken Show—an unforgettable experience full of humor, surprise, and “Ameri-Do-Te” flair! If there had been a prize for “The Person Who Laughed the Most,” I would have gladly and proudly accepted it—with grace and a big smile! 😂
Every year at this retreat brings something special. Last year was amazing, but this year truly outdid itself—especially having most of the team together. We trained hard, shared deeply, and laughed freely. The sense of family, community and purpose was something I will carry with me for a long time.

We’re gonna have a good one? We had a great one.
Already looking forward to next year!
